The Best Financier Bakeries in Paris
Paris remains the undisputed capital of the financier. While nearly every boulangerie stocks them, a handful of addresses have elevated this humble almond cake to an art form. Here are our top picks.
Stohrer — Rue Montorgueil, 2nd Arrondissement
Founded in 1730, Stohrer is Paris's oldest pâtisserie and a landmark on the lively Rue Montorgueil market street. Their financiers are classically proportioned — deeply golden, heavily buttered, and generously nutty. This is the platonic ideal against which all others are measured.
Pierre Hermé — Multiple Locations
The Picasso of pastry brings his characteristic creativity to the financier. Seasonal offerings might include rose and raspberry, or matcha and black sesame. His Saint-Germain flagship on Rue Bonaparte is the best place to sample the full range. Expect queues on weekends — they are entirely justified.
Du Pain et des Idées — Canal Saint-Martin, 10th Arrondissement
Christophe Vasseur's neo-retro boulangerie beside the Canal Saint-Martin is famed for its escargots, but the financiers deserve equal attention. Baked in traditional oval moulds rather than the standard rectangle, they have a distinctive caramelised edge and a particularly moist centre. Arrive before 10 a.m. to avoid selling out.
Ladurée — Rue Royale, 8th Arrondissement
While Ladurée is rightly celebrated for its macarons, its financiers are an often-overlooked gem. Served in the gilded tearoom or boxed to take away, they are refined, delicate, and unmistakably Parisian. A gift box of assorted financiers makes one of the finest edible souvenirs the city has to offer.
A city that can do this with leftover egg whites deserves every Michelin star it has ever received.
